Ships are once again sailing into Hamilton Harbour. The Port Authority launched the 2015 shipping season today, a couple of weeks late due to the exceptionally cold winter. Officials say ice cover on the lakes held things up and while there’s still a fair amount of ice on Lake Huron things have opened up enough to allow ships to move merchandise.
It’s the 130th year ships have been carrying cargo into the Port of Hamilton. The Pacific Huron sailed into the port this morning and as the first ship of the season, the captain was presented with the traditional Top Hat ceremony, a ritual for almost 70 years. The Pacific Huron docked at the port Monday morning and has more than 16 tonnes of steel coils from Spain and Italy to unload.
The ship was delayed due to the ice on the lakes and the captain says they still got an icy reception coming into Hamilton. “The first part of this lake about 15 miles is also covered by ice, 30 to 40 centimeters.”
The port of Hamilton is the busiest in all of Ontario. Last year more than 10.5 million tonnes of cargo came through here and this year they are expecting the same. “This year looks really really good, we still have an abundance of grain, going over seas, with The Pacific Huron a lot of steal coming in and a lot of project cargo coming in.” And all of these comings and goings are great for the economy, “the cargo that comes through the Port of Hamilton is connected to 38,000 jobs in Ontario, and $6 billion in economic activity.”
