Hamilton police say alcohol and speeding were contributing factors in a crash that killed two people on Upper Centennial Parkway in August.

Officers say on Aug. 29, at around 6:35 p.m., a serious collision happened at the intersection of Highgate Drive and Upper Centennial Parkway.

A 1951 Plymouth was travelling southbound on the parkway when it accelerated, lost control and collided with a northbound 2020 Mercedes sedan.

The driver and passenger of the Plymouth were pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger of the Mercedes was transported to hospital and later released with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes sustained minor injuries.

Detectives say toxicology results revealed that the driver of the Plymouth was impaired by alcohol.

Investigators did not reveal information or names for any of the people involved in the crash.

Following the collision, a half dozen flower bouquets were placed against a cross with the name “Joey” on it at the scene of the crash by members of the Stoney Creek community.

Hamilton police say this is the city’s fourth fatal impaired-driving-related crash of the year, resulting in eight deaths.

Anyone with additional information surrounding the investigation is asked to contact police.
