Community leader, Hamilton businessman and co-founder of Carmen’s Banquet Centre Peter Mercanti died Thursday morning.
A statement on behalf of his sons PJ and Joe Mercanti to CHCH News confirmed that Peter passed away peacefully at home at around 8:30 a.m., surrounded by his family.
“A proud Hamiltonian, Peter Mercanti was a visionary leader, a community builder and one of our city’s most passionate champions,” said Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath in a statement. “Peter’s passing is a tremendous loss for Hamilton.”
Flamborough-Glanbrook MPP Donna Skelly posted on social media Thursday afternoon saying that Peter helped build a Hamilton landmark and his contributions helped strengthen the city, touching countless lives.

A spokesperson from Carmen’s Group says the family is still working through funeral details, and will share the information publicly once confirmed.
