Halton police, Crime Stoppers to hold frauds and scams seminar

Residents in Halton Region will have the opportunity to learn how to protect themselves from fraud during an information session later this month.
Crime Stoppers of Halton, in partnership with Halton Regional Police Service, will be hosting the free seminar on March 12.
It will teach residents about the tactics fraudsters use to collect personal information, solicit funds, and compromise security.
It will also highlight ways to avoid becoming a victim of a fraud or scam.
Halton police say they are invested in protecting Halton’s most vulnerable citizens.
“Unfortunately fraudsters will target older adults, as well as new comers. Halton Regional Police Service has designated Older Adult Investigators, as well as Community Officers, in each district, that provide education and follow up with these vulnerable populations,” said Det. Cst. Nadine Clarke in a news release. “Education is the key and we believe these types of partnerships and knowledge sharing is the way to combat fraud.”
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reports that over 48,000 Canadians lost $98 million to frauds in 2019.
“Frauds happen on the phone, via email, text, and in person. It is our duty to share best practices and educate Halton residents on how to keep themselves and their loved one’s safe from these perpetrators,” said Colin Jessome, Executive Director of Crime Stoppers of Halton.
The Frauds and Scams seminar will take place in the Community Room at the Halton Regional Police Headquarters 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Organizers say space is limited so pre-registration is required online at Eventbrite.
