Groundhog Day goes virtual as Wiarton Willie predicts an early spring
Canada’s groundhogs are in agreement — an early spring for 2021.
Tuesday’s Groundhog Day festivities happened online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ontario’s Wiarton Willie and Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam emerged from their homes without crowds.
Folklore has it that if a groundhog sees its shadow on Feb. 2, it will retreat into its burrow, heralding six more weeks of cold weather.
If not, an early spring is on the way.
Both Shubenacadie Sam and Wiarton Willie predicted an early spring.
Whoa! No shadow to be seen through this storm! Can’t wait for early spring! Do storm showers bring spring flowers? #EarlySpring #StormDay #GroundhogDay2021 pic.twitter.com/sO5gqEZl6V
