Gender neutral anthem?

The lyrics to O Canada will be a hot topic in Ottawa today. The House of Commons is debating whether or not to make the national anthem gender-neutral, by replacing the line in the English version “in all thy sons command” with “in all of us command.”

The effort to change the anthem is being made by dying liberal Mauril Belanger. He introduced his private member’s bill in January, but the opposition Conservatives thwarted an attempt to pass it earlier this month, with MP Erin O’Toole saying Canada shouldn’t change important parts of its heritage.
