Four beaches in the Niagara Region have closed their shores this week, three due to unsafe E. coli levels and one from damages caused by elevated Lake Ontario water levels.

Sunset Beach near the Port Weller Harbour in St. Catharines, Queen’s Royal Beach in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Sherkston Elco in Port Colborne are closed after a recent water test revealed high levels of the bacteria.

Sunset Beach had reopened a few weeks ago after renovations began for a multimillion-dollar makeover project in 2023.

Nelles Beach in the Town of Grimsby has been closed after elevated Lake Ontario water levels submerged and damaged local infrastructure including the stairs and accessibility ramp.

Grimsby staff said in a statement that the town is “not in a position to comment on current water quality results or related advisories.”

Updates on the beach water testing status of the 19 beaches in the Niagara Region can be found online.
