The four falcon chicks born in a nest on top of Hamilton’s Sheraton Hotel have now been banded.
An extra climber was on site to help safely manage the parent falcons during the process. One of the adult falcons was particularly protective, and a broom was used as a safety buffer, leaving no falcons harmed.
This year’s chicks include two females and two males, who are now officially named after Hamilton neighbourhoods.
Corktown is a female wearing a red band, Vincent is a male wearing blue, Dalewood is a male wearing yellow and Saltfleet is a female wearing white.
All four were banded at 19-days-old and are now part of the continuing Hamilton Falconwatch program.
Banding helps the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club track and ensure the safety of the falcons.
The full banding video and live replays are available online on the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club website.
