The Fort Erie Race Track announced Monday it will be running the 91st Prince of Wales Stakes event on Sept. 7.

The 1 3/16-mile dirt race — a little over 1.9 km — is the second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, and offers a total pool of $400,000, one of the richest prizes offered for any dirt track horse race in Canada.

The race is restricted to Canadian-bred 3-year-old horses.

“The Prince of Wales Stakes not only highlights the exceptional talent in Canadian thoroughbred racing, but also delivers one of the most exciting days on the North American horse racing calendar,” said the racetrack’s COO Drew Cady in a statement, “and by moving the race back to a holiday long weekend, we expect this year’s Prince of Wales Stakes to be the biggest and best in several years.”

It will follow the $1-million King’s Plate, which will be held at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack on Aug. 15.

Woodbine hasn’t yet divulged a date for the $400,000 Breeders Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown.
