Fort Erie man charged with attempted murder after cop injured during domestic violence call

A 45-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge after a Niagara police officer was seriously injured while responding to a domestic disturbance call over the weekend.
Investigators responded around noon Saturday to the area of Spears Road North in Fort Erie for a domestic dispute report.
The Domestic Violence Unit then took over the investigation after it was determined that a criminal offence had occurred.
Nearly three hours later, police say an officer and the man were involved in an incident. The police officer was taken to an out-of-region hospital with serious injuries. He remains there in stable condition as of Tuesday.
The Fort Erie man was arrested at the scene and taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
Fortunately, the woman was not injured.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate.
In an update Tuesday, Niagara police say the man has been charged with attempted murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing bodily harm, two counts of uttering threats (spousal), and careless storage of a firearm.
Officers are not naming the accused in order to protect the identity of his spouse.
Investigators also seized a shotgun from the home in Fort Erie.
The man had a bail hearing Sunday in St. Catharines and remains in custody.
