Environment Minister speaks on Randle Reef

Canada’s Environment Minister says the proposed Randle Reef sediment remediation project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Peter Kent says that in reaching his decision, he considered a comprehensive study report and the comments received from the public on the report.

The project involves the construction of a capped containment facility off the Hamilton Port Authority’s pier 15. When it’s capped, it will trap enough coal tar sediment to fill Copps Coliseum three times. The Minister says the project was assessed using a science-based approach in accordance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

He’s now referred the project back to the responsible authorities for action. Those agencies are Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Hamilton Port Authority and Transport Canada.
