It’s time for colours, lights and celebrations - Diwali is here! Known as the festival of lights, Deepavali is celebrated on the day of ‘amavasya’ or new moon in the month of Karthik in Hindu calendar to mark the conquest of truth over ignorance and light over darkness. The five-day celebrations start with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dooj. Here's a look at how people are celebrating across India, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Millions of Hindus around the world – including those in Hamilton and the GTA – will celebrate Diwali this weekend.

The holiday falls on Sunday this year, but many Hindus also celebrated, Saturday.

Diwali – known as the festival of lights – celebrates the victory of light over darkness. People celebrate the occasion by setting off firecrackers, decorating and lighting up their homes with candles and eating delectable foods.

The religious day is principally celebrated with prayers to the goddess of wealth.
