As we experience warmer than seasonal temperatures, more and more people are taking the time to set up their Christmas lights on their homes and trees. But an alarming number of people are seriously hurting themselves in the process and trauma doctors in Hamilton want to avoid more people coming through their doors. In the Hamilton General trauma centre, autumn is normally just called “fall.”

“This time of the year, above 60% of our cases are from falls.”

To prevent such injuries, Dr. Al Zubaydee suggests working with a partner on days where wind is low, cushion the area around the ladder in case you fall and despite the holiday season, avoid drinking before stepping up the ladder.

Hamilton Health Science says that a majority of those who enter the trauma centre are between 40 and 80 years old. So if you know someone at the latter end of that spectrum who wants their home decorated, there are several landscapers who offer the service during the fall and winter months.
