Welland Fire with the assistance of Niagara Falls Fire have rescued a person they say fell into a construction trench.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Welland Fire responded to the area of Ontario and Plymouth roads after reports of a person who had fallen into a hole.
Upon arrival, the platoon chief determined that a person had fallen into a large excavation within the roadway.
Given the depth of the excavation and the conditions at the scene, the platoon chief recognized that a specialized trench rescue operation would be required to safely remove the person.
As Welland Fire does not maintain a specialized trench rescue team, the platoon chief requested help from Niagara Falls Fire, which has personnel trained and equipped to perform these types of technical rescues.

Upon their arrival, crews worked together to establish a rope rescue system, utilizing the aerial apparatus as an elevated anchor point above the excavation.
Crews say a Stokes rescue basket was then lowered into the excavation, where the person was secured and then raised to safety.
Following the successful rescue, the person was transferred into the care of Niagara Emergency Medical Services and Ornge for further medical assessment and treatment.
Welland Fire reminds the public of the dangers associated with open excavations and construction sites.
Crews encourage the public to remain clear of excavations and respect all safety barriers and signage.
