9 people, 4 vehicles and 1 piece of metal debris. That’s what was involved in a chain reaction crash on the QEW near Ford Drive in Oakville killing a Toronto mother.
Around 8pm Sunday night, 2 vehicles were travelling on the Toronto bound lanes of the QEW when they both struck a long piece of metal, weighing between 40 and 50 pounds. I’s a metal part used by tow trucks to pull other vehicles.
The drivers then pulled over on this shoulder and they got out to look at the damage to their cars. Police say that’s when a 3rd car hit the debris, smashed into a another car before veering into them.
The driver of the black Honda Civic, 54 year old Nurten Kaska from Toronto was killed. Three others were taken to hospital.
The Ministry of Transportation is usually notified if there are objects on the highway, but police say MTO were not aware of this object before the crash happened. The worst part Kerry Schmidt of the OPP, says is that this crash could have been avoided.
“We don’t want people getting out of their vehicles if it is not necessary. The best place for you to stay is inside your vehicle.”
Every situation is different but police say if your car is still working after a crash you should get off at the nearest exit.
