Hamilton’s Police Services Board has voted unanimously to extend Chief Glenn De Caire’s contract, which was set to expire at the end of next year.  But his extension is for just two years instead of the original plan of a three-year extension.

After hours discussing the matter in council chambers, all seven board members voted in favour of extending the 53-year- old’s contract.

The shorter extension means the current board will hire the next police chief before their term expires with the next municipal election, set for 2018.

De Caire has been chief for the past six years, after serving 29 years with Toronto Police.

During his time in charge, the crime rate in Hamilton has gone down almost 30 per cent.

But a recent survey by the Hamilton Police Association revealed 72 percent of officers who responded did *not* want De Caire’s contract extended.

Just under 58 per cent of force’s officers and civilian members participated in the survey.

The Police Services Board felt that statistics spoke louder than subjective opinions.
