Collins rejects Trudeau’s tax rebate proposal

MP Chad Collins says he doesn’t agree with the tax rebate that his Liberal government is proposing. Last week, the Trudeau government announced plans to send $250 to every Canadian who worked in 2023 and earned less than $150,000.

Collins made it clear to his party that he doesn’t support the bill, which led to a private meeting on Monday between him and a representative from the Liberal government.

While he wasn’t told what the specific consequences could be, we asked him if he’s worried about being kicked out of the party.

Political science professor at McMaster, Peter Graefe, says this is not uncommon for MPs to do when their leader is declining in popularity.

Collins’ potential consequences don’t align with what Trudeau was saying in the House.

“Liberal MPs are free to speak their minds and voice their opinions, even when we have disagreements,” said Trudeau.

As for Chad Collins’ future in politics, he says he always consults his friends, family, and staff first. Running for mayor of Hamilton in 2026 is in the cards he stated that he’s focused on being an MP right now.
