Canadians in Mexico told to shelter in place after violence erupts

Canadians in western Mexico are being told to shelter in place and limit their movement in the country as mass violence erupts after the arrest of El Chapo’s son.

Sinaloa’s state capital is filled with roadblocks and gunfire and similar acts of violence are playing out in other parts of the state as well following the capture of alleged drug trafficker Ovidio “The Mouse” Guzman, son of imprisoned drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

The federal government is advising Canadians in Mexico to shelter in place due to the violence in the western part of the country.

Officials in Ottawa say the violence is raging in Culiacan, Mazatlan, Los Mochis and Guasave.

An Edmonton woman whose family is trapped in a Mexican hotel calls the situation “chaos.”

Tina Dahl says her brother, sister-in-law, their three children and her sister-in-law’s mother were supposed to return to Canada Thursday, but are now stranded after the buses to take them to the airport were set on fire.

A spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada says they are aware of Canadians affected by these events and are providing consular services.
