Canadian citizens travelling to China will no longer be required to get visas for 30-day stays.
China’s foreign ministry is dropping the visa requirement for Canadian tourists and business visitors starting tomorrow until at least the end of this year.
Eligibility for China’s program has expanded significantly over the last two years. The 30-day stays for visitors are for business, tourism, exchange programs and to visit family and friends.
The change comes about a month after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Beijing where the two leaders committed to visa-free access for Canadians, which China never confirmed.
For most Canadian tourists, entering mainland China requires a lengthy application process and roughly $140 in fees.
In a years-long diplomatic spat, Beijing had maintained a visa for Canadians and restricted how many Chinese tourism groups could visit Canada.
