Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid netted the winning goal at the 8:18 mark in ‘OT’.
Canadian goals came from Nathan MacKinnon in the first period and Sam Bennett in the second. Goalie Jordan Binnington made 25 saves in the first three periods and six more in overtime.
Ottawa Senators’ captain Brady Tkachuk — whose mother is from Winnipeg — and Jake Sanderson scored for the Americans. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped 22 shots in regulation and three in overtime.
The series’ final game was held at TD Garden in Boston and was an emotionally charged one for fans of both countries, much of it stemming from North American politics — and national pride.
U.S. President Donald Trump has already threatened and imposed tariffs against Canada in the first month of his second term as president. He has also made many comments on what he says is Canada’s economic reliance on the U.S. and how it should become the 51st state.
Four countries were in the Face-Off tournament: Sweden, Finland, Canada and the United States. The series featured each country’s top NHL players.
Canada’s MacKinnon who is a center with the Colorado Avalanche was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Prime Minister Trudeau proudly posted on X after the win.
