The Canadian Union of Postal workers and Canada Post are continuing negotiations in their best efforts to avoid a strike.

The cooling-off period ended Saturday, allowing either party to initiate a labour disruption after providing a minimum notice of 72-hours.

The crown corporation says “neither it nor the postal union will issue the required 72-hour notice for a strike or lockout as long as the talks are productive.”

Canada post says their regular business operations will continue while negotiations are ongoing.

The corporation presented its latest contract offer to the union Oct. 29, proposing new annual wage increases amounting to 11.5 per cent over four years.

The proposal also offered to continue wage protections against unforeseen inflation as well as job security and health benefits.

Both parties have been in negotiations for almost a year.

The Federal Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon has urged both sides to reach a deal.
