Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday that Canada intends to recognize the state of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September.
He says this would be predicated on the Palestinian Authority undertaking reforms and an election next year in which Hamas can play no part.
“Preserving a two-state solution means standing with all people who choose peace over violence or terrorism,” said Carney. “And it means honouring their innate desire for peaceful coexistence.”
Carney said Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution but its prospects have been “steadily and gravely eroded.”
The prime minister reiterated that Hamas to immediately release all hostages taken in the October 7 attack, that Hamas disarms and that Hamas must play no role in the future governance of Palestine.
Canada has committed over $340 million in humanitarian aid toward the situation in Gaza, which includes $30 million of new funding to help Palestinian civilians and $10 million to support Palestinian Authority’s role in stabilizing the West Bank.
The Embassy of Israel released a statement saying it rejects Canada’s endorsement of Palestinian statehood, and posted on X at around 5:46 p.m. saying the change in position of the Canadian Government is a “reward for Hamas and harms the efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.”
