Brantford police begin rollout of body-worn cameras on officers

Brantford police announced Wednesday the rollout of body-worn cameras for front-line officers, with plans to be operational for all officers by the end of the year.
The police service began the deployment of the new equipment this week.
Officers plan to wear and use body-worn cameras during interactions with the public, including for traffic stops, calls for service, and for enforcement activities.
The cameras are worn on the chest of an officer’s uniform and have a display light on them to indicate when recording has been activated.

Brantford police say they were able to implement the new body cameras after receiving provincial grant funding.
They say the use of the technology will enhance community and officer safety, increasing transparency and accountability in policing.
Police also say the use of the technology respects citizen’s privacy and rights as recognized under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and is in full compliance with guidelines set by the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.
