No injuries have been reported after a balcony fire at a downtown Hamilton apartment building Thursday.

First responders were called to the blaze at 136 Bay St. South around 3 p.m. where there was visible smoke coming from the structure.

Firefighters at the scene said the flames moved from the balcony into the apartment on the 11th floor, prompting an evacuation of the building.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

Hamilton fire officials say a person on the 10th floor in need of assistance was evaluated and cleared by emergency crews at the scene.

Officials say the cause is unknown and it has not been deemed suspicious.

All residents were allowed back into the building Thursday with the exception of the affected unit.

Damage due to the fire is estimated at $100,000.
