7th Canadian death recorded in cantaloupe-related salmonellosis

The cantaloupe-related salmonella outbreak has claimed the life of another Canadian, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada, bringing the death toll in the country to seven.

In total, there have been 164 lab-confirmed cases across eight provinces, all linking back to Malichita and Rudy-branded cantaloupes.

Of those 164 cases, Quebec has been affected the worst — with 111 cases originating within the province.

Sixty-one people have been hospitalized as a result of the contaminated melon.

Children aged five and below, as well as adults over the age of 65 make up the majority of cases nationwide.

A recall was put out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on Nov. 1. The Malichita and Rudy-branded cantaloupes were sold between Oct. 10 and Nov. 24.
