The Canada Revenue Agency has fired an additional 65 employees for claiming a federal COVID-19 benefit when they were not eligible.

It brings the total number of terminations connected to falsely claiming the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, or CERB, to 185.

The CRA says it is reviewing around 600 cases in which current employees received CERB during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The benefit provided $2,000 to Canadians who had lost or had their positions downgraded as a result of public-health restrictions.

Of the cases that have been reviewed, 116 employees who received CERB were found to be eligible and those who were found to be ineligible will be expected to pay back the money if they have not already done so.
