Spring bear hunt returns

Ontario says it will go ahead with its plans to return the spring bear hunt in the province, dismissing TV personality Bob Barker’s request to discontinue it.

Natural resources minister David Orazietti says the hunt will reduce the number of calls police receive when bears get too close to residents. “It’s putting the lives of children and the public at very real risk. Is it going to take a fatality in Ontario?”

“We’ve had this happen before. Is it going to take a small child being mauled to death before there is a change in direction and policy.”

Barker calls the spring bear hunt barbaric, unethical and has nothing to do with science.
