Canada Post and the City of Hamilton were battling it out in court today over community mailboxes. Canada Post is in the process of installing super mailboxes, as part of its plan to stop home mail delivery but the city wants a say in how and where they do it.

Henry Evan-Tenbrinke has spent every day since May 11th on a community mailbox pad trying to stop Canada Post from installing super mailboxes on Hamilton mountain. He’s against Canada Post’s plan to phase out door to door mail delivery. “Their campaign is not taking into affect it’s having on disabled and senior citizens.”

And he’s not alone, dozens of people gathered outside the John Sopinka Courthouse, holding signs calling for door-to-door mail delivery to be maintained but Canada Post says it’s a done deal. “We can’t go back to door to door we can’t maintain that service that costs almost 3 times as much as serving a community mailbox with the amount of mail that keeps disappearing every single year.”

Inside the courthouse Canada Post is facing off against the city over where they can put these super mailboxes. The fight started when city council changed a bylaw that requires Canada Post to get a $200 permit per site to instal mailboxes on municipal land.

When it comes to a decision in this case we will have to wait a bit longer, court will resume tomorrow morning. The judge says he expects to have a decision within the month.
