The City of Hamilton held a special closed door meeting this morning as the deadline for a possible HSR strike nears. The meeting got underway shortly after 11 this morning but when councillors emerged, they weren’t saying much.

The meeting was called after the union presented a proposal calling for a one year contract.  Last year the city’s 450 bus drivers made between $20 and $30 an hour placing them right in the middle of the the list of larger Ontario cities.  Mayor Fred Eisenberger refused to discuss details of this morning’s meeting but did say he is hoping a negotiated settlement can be reached. “I agree with them it’s an important service in our community and we want to make sure there isn’t a service interruption and we are doing everything possible to avoid it.”

The union is not commenting but did post on their website that they are working around the clock to reach a settlement. The last transit strike in Hamilton was in 1998 and lasted 3 months.
