It may not feel like it but spring has arrived and that means wildlife will soon be growing their families. And they can get into your attic or walls, defecate, urinate, chew wires and destroy insulation. Unwanted house guests can cause thousands of dollars in damage.
Probably the most vulnerable areas are roof vents, those are vents every home has which properly vent the attic of your home. All sorts of animals are searching out heat source and they are attracted and will rip those vents right off and right into the attic space. Birds nests may also be a sign of spring but they are also a sign of impending trouble. “Squirrels or raccoon will come along and eat the eggs or the baby birds as well any down spout areas like that raccoons will climb up the down spout, reach up pull the aluminium down and once again the animal gets into the attic space.” Says Bill Dowd from Skedaddle Wildlife
Now that the snow has melted go outside and take a walk around your house and check to see if there is a possibility that rodents or any form of wildlife could be getting in to damage your home, look for things like a hole dug by a skunk and empty peanut shells obviously a food source for mice squirrels even raccoons.
Professionals say removing the pests is only part of the problem. If you do have wildlife, locate where they are getting in and seal it off to ensure they aren’t back again next spring.
Editor’s note: The headline to this story has been updated, since not all wildlife are rodents. Raccoons are mammals. CHCH News apologizes to raccoons everywhere for lumping them in with the wrong species, and homeowners for having to put up with them.
