Preview of Hamilton East—Stoney Creek riding as byelection voters head to polls

Voters are heading to the polls in three key provincial by-elections, with at least one race set to be tight: the race in Hamilton East—Stoney Creek.

The election was called after Neil Lumsden, the former progressive conservative MPP for the riding, announced his retirement last month.

He held the seat for about four years and the PCs will, of course, be looking to hold onto it, but the NDP and Liberals are on their heels.

The candidates for the by-election are:

• Hamilton City Councillor Jeff Beattie, who is running for the PCs. He’s also a local business owner and was formerly a Hamilton Wentworth District School Board trustee from 2015 to 2018;
• Former Hamilton Mountain MPP Monique Taylor, who is running for the NDP. She is no stranger to provincial politics, and was previously an MPP for just over 13 years, before opting to run federally last year. She lost that race;
• Heino Doessing, who is running for the Liberal party. He is from Denmark, where he was a municipal councillor. He also previously ran for the seat in Hamilton—East Stoney Creek last year and;
• Pascale Marchand, who is running for the Green Party. She also ran for the seat in Hamilton—East Stoney Creek last year against Doessing. She also ran municipally for Ward Four in Hamilton in 2022.

The polls opened Thursday morning at 9 a.m. and will close at 9 p.m.
