The Hamilton Police Service Board announced Thursday that Ryan Diodati will be the next chief of police following Frank Bergen’s retirement.
Diodati is set to be the next chief of police on May 7, 2027, the day after Bergen’s retirement.
Diodati is in his 30th year with Hamilton police, serving as as deputy chief in operations and support over the last seven years.
He oversaw frontline policing and operational units and ensured a coordinated response to crime, community needs and public safety.
The police board has also appointed Supt. Marty Schulenberg as deputy chief of police, which will also be effective on May 7.
Schulenberg is in his 32nd year with Hamilton police, bringing extensive experience in frontline policing, investigations, operational support, incident command and executive leadership.
“This decision shapes the leadership of the service and a commitment to the safety of our community. We are building on Chief Bergen’s work and choosing leadership that understands Hamilton, knows our members and recognizes where we need to be. This appointment provides continuity for our members and the people we serve,” said Chair Don Robertson.
The police board says the appointments come ahead of Bergen’s retirement, giving the command team time to prepare for a smooth transition. A swearing-in ceremony and transfer of office will take place in May.
