Neil Lumsden, member of provincial parliament (MPP) for Hamilton East-Stoney Creek and minister of sport, announced his retirement on Friday effective Aug. 4.

“To the people of Hamilton East-Stoney Creek, thank you for the trust you placed in me. Representing you has been the honour of a lifetime and I retire with tremendous optimism for the future of our community and our province under the leadership of Premier Ford,” Lumsden wrote on X.

He has been the MPP for Hamilton East-Stoney Creek since June 2, 2022, serving for just over four years.

Lumsden helped make real progress through the launch of the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund, the largest investment in Ontario of its kind, to help build and revitalize spaces that keep people active and healthy.

The Inclusive Grassroots Recreation Program was another initiative Lumsden played a huge role in, increasing the funding for after-school programs.

He also helped advance Rowan’s Law, Ontario legislation that requires amateur sports groups to implement strict concussion protocols to keep athletes safe.

“Neil has been a dedicated public servant with a storied career during his time in the CFL, as a minister and as the MPP for Hamilton East-Stoney Creek,” Premier Doug Ford wrote on X.

“In particular, I want to thank Neil for his work supporting Toronto’s successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup. Ontario is lucky to have benefited from his leadership. I wish Neil and his family all the very best in his retirement.”

“Earlier today, I accepted the resignation of Stan Cho from Cabinet, effective immediately. He has acknowledged and taken responsibility for his mistake. He will continue to serve the people of Willowdale as their Member of Provincial Parliament,” Ford added.
