Niagara-on-the-Lake man charged in fatal hit-and-run of cyclist

Police say a 22-year-old man from Niagara-on-the-Lake is facing charges after a cyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle late Friday night.

At approximately 11:40 p.m., officers responded to reports of a cyclist being struck by a vehicle in the area of Concession Road 6 near Line 4 Road.

Once on scene, authorities confirmed that the cyclist had sustained fatal injuries.

They add that the vehicle and driver involved in the collision fled the scene prior to emergency services arriving.

Investigators later located the suspected vehicle and driver in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The driver was then arrested, and the involved vehicle was seized for examination.

As a result, 22-year-old Gavin Devries has been charged with the following:

  • Failure to Stop After Accident Resulting in Death, contrary to section 320.16(3) of the Criminal Code
  • Impaired Operation Causing Death, contrary to section 320.14(3) of the Criminal Code
