Police charge Hamilton man following human trafficking investigation

Hamilton police arrested a Hamilton man Wednesday in connection with a human trafficking investigation involving the alleged advertisement of sexual services online.

Officers say an investigation began earlier this month into Michael Smith in relation to human trafficking activities in the City of Hamilton.

Investigators allege that between June of last year to this March, Smith trafficked multiple people, advertised sexual services online and financially benefited from the exploitation of those individuals.

They further allege that he used violence and controlled substances to exert control over his victims.

Smith was arrested Wednesday and appeared in court later that day, where he was remanded into custody.

Police released his image believing there may be more victims.

Officers are reminding residents that there is no statute of limitations for human trafficking, and survivors can report any incident to the non-emergency line, or by filing online on the official Hamilton Police Service website.
