Hamilton police warn public to stay off ice after Pier 7 water rescue

Hamilton police rescued six individuals who fell through the ice near the Pier 7 Boardwalk Saturday afternoon.

On March 7, officers responded to a call reporting that two young people had fallen through the ice near the pier at 121 Haida Avenue.

The caller said several bystanders had entered the water and attempted to rescue the two young people. Upon arriving on scene, authorities were flagged down and learned that a total of six individuals had gone in the water.

Throw bags were deployed and all individuals in the water were safely pulled to shore. Hamilton paramedics were also on scene and assisted those involved.

Investigators learned that the two young individuals had been on the ice when it began to weaken. Witnesses warned them that the ice was becoming thin but they remained on the ice.

One of the two young people noticed the ice bending beneath them and tried to jump away. The ice broke and both fell into the water.

Several bystanders went onto the ice to assist them but broke through the ice and fell in the water as well.

All six individuals were rescued by police.

One young person who was submerged briefly and experienced prolonged exposure to the cold water was transported to hospital for further assessment.

The other individuals involved were assessed by paramedics at the scene.

As a result of the incident, police are warning residents that fluctuating temperatures have made ice conditions very unsafe. Ice may appear solid but can become thin and unstable.

Officials are urging residents to stay off all frozen lakes, ponds and waterways.
