Prime Minister Mark Carney is meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi as Canada seeks to reset strained relations.

Carney landed in India on Friday, before meeting with Modi Monday — the first bilateral visit to India by a Canadian prime minister since 2018.

The visit is part of a 10-day trip, where Carney will continue to Australia Tuesday, followed by Japan Friday.

The two announced a series of agreements, including a strategic energy partnership, and partnerships in the technology sector, particularly focused in AI, quantum and aerospace.

The agreements also include a $2.6 million agreement in which Saskatoon-based Cameco would supply just under 22 million pounds of uranium to India for nuclear energy generation.

A governmental release says the visit also led to 10 commercial agreements worth over $5.5 billion, and at least five Memorandums of Understanding.

Both Carney and Modi confirmed that Canada and India will conclude a new Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) this year.

“In a rapidly changing world, Canada and India are transforming their economies to be more diversified, more independent, and more resilient,” said Carney in the governmental release. “Our strategic partnership, and the speed at which we are working to unleash its potential in energy, talent, and AI, is the result of two confident, ambitious nations who want to build the future, together.”

The talks come following a report that alleged Indian consular staff in Vancouver played a role in the killing of a Canadian Sikh activist in Surrey, B.C., in June 2023.

Diplomatic ties deteriorated after former prime minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of being involved in the killing.

The Carney government began repairing relations last year, with an invitation to Modi to join the G7 meetings in Alberta.
