One person is dead and another was sent to hospital after a tire fell off a pickup truck on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) Tuesday afternoon and struck another car. A 33-year-old man from Niagara Falls, New York is facing charges.

Niagara OPP responded to the crash just before noon.

In an X post, police say the pickup truck was travelling on the Fort Erie-bound when the tire came loose, bounced into the Toronto-bound lanes, and crashed into another vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle, a 53-year-old man from the United States, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 52-year-old man who was a passenger was transported to hospital.

Police say that after striking the Toronto-bound vehicle, the flying tire bounced off the QEW and landed over the barrier.

The 33-year-old driver of the pickup truck has been charged with operating an unsafe vehicle.

Investigators and the Collision Reconstruction team closed the QEW in St. Catharines in both directions between Glendale Avenue and Niagara Street for several hours yesterday. The roads have since reopened.
