$1M blaze destroys livestock, 120+ year-old barn

It’s estimated that one hundred cows and calves died in an overnight blaze in Wainfleet.

The fire destroyed a barn on a property on the corner of Millrace and Forks road.

Two brothers who live there say they tried to get their cows out of the barn but the animals they got loose ran inside. The brothers say the building is more than 120 years old.

The agriculture and environment ministries were called – one for the animals killed in the fire, the other to ensure water run-off did not enter nearby creeks.

It’s estimated the damage could reach the $1 million mark.
