More healthcare could soon be coming to downtown Hamilton — because the city could be giving a $10 million injection to a new McMaster Medical Centre.

Hamilton mayor Bob Bratina hopes the state of the art medical facility will redefine the city’s downtown core.
The $100 million dollar building will be built on Main Street at the corner of Bay – the current site of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
The final decision on dedicating the $10 million from the city’s future fund won’t be made until August. But Bratina says he can’t think of a better use for the money.

“We’re going ahead with a major facility whose prime function is to train family doctors and look after very vulnerable people so we know that we have a heart this is one of our major projects and it will be directed toward helping people who need help to a great extent. It’s very special for us.”
The mayor adds that the project will help create new jobs in the city as well as help with the province’s overall doctor shortage.
McMaster was seeking $20 million from the city.
The clinic is expected to open in 2013 and treat more than 54,000 patients each year.
