A family is homeless after a fire at their home on Hamilton mountain.

It started in this house on Larch St around 2:30 this morning. The blaze broke out in the basement laundry room. A woman, her five children and the family dog got out safely, after their smoke detector woke them up.

The house is owned by the city of Hamilton and workers will spend the day going through the property.

Platoon chief Patrick McCafferty told CHCH News, “Smoke alarms are mandated by law on every level of every occupied structure in Ontario and here they showed their worth.”

Damage is estimated at more than $250,000. Hamilton Fire says they are working to determine what sparked the blaze.

The city’s in the process of finding another suitable place for the family to live.
