Welland school with 11 COVID-19 cases to remain open

First Published:

Niagara Region Public Health is recommending that a Welland school with nearly a dozen confirmed cases of COVID-19 remain open.

Quaker Road Public School now has 11 confirmed cases of the virus after an additional five cases were identified on Sunday.

The board says nine classrooms within the school have been closed as a result but say the school will remain open, based on guidance from public health.

“[Niagara Region Public Health] has assessed the situation and recommended that the school remain open,” said the board in a news release.

“They strongly encourage everyone in the Quaker Road school community to do their daily active screening and to stay home if they exhibit even one symptom of COVID-19.”

Students and staff members who’ve had close contact with those infected have been contacted by public health and told to stay home.

The board is also reporting one case of the virus has been reported as Gordon Public School. Two classrooms there have been closed.

A case has also been confirmed at Central French Immersion Public School. Four classrooms there have been closed.
