Prosecutors in Los Angeles are now at a critical stage in the case against Nick Reiner, the son of Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner, who were both found dead in their home on Sunday. Nick was taken into police custody following the crime and is being held on a four-million-dollar bond. Today, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced two counts of first-degree murder against him. The announcement of these charges starts the clock toward a preliminary hearing, which is expected to happen within two weeks.
Meanwhile, the deaths of Rob and his wife Michele continue to draw widespread attention. Many are paying their respects to the late director and actor, reflecting on the legacy he leaves behind in Hollywood. Others are noting his outspoken political activism, which at times focused on U.S. President Donald Trump. Back in 2021, Reiner was reportedly working on a TV project about the relationship between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Deadline and The Dean Obeidallah Show.
Trump was quick to criticize the late director following the announcement of his death and doubled down on his stance when asked again late yesterday. The comments have prompted backlash from both ends of the political spectrum.
As the public response continues, the legal process remains deliberate. Attention is now expected to turn to Nick Reiner’s first court appearance. His defense attorney, Alan Jackson, says he does not expect a hearing before his client has been “medically cleared” to be transported from jail to the courthouse.
New information continues to come to light, including multiple sources who say Nick Reiner was “disruptive” at a holiday party hours before the murders. But the DA’s office stressed the importance of relying on information from trusted sources and not feeding into rumors surrounding the case.
The charges against Nick Reiner carry a maximum sentence of life in prison or the death penalty. The Los Angeles County District Attorney says the family’s thoughts and wishes will be taken into consideration when deciding which to pursue.
