Staff injuries hike in Hamilton public schools from student attacks

There has been an increase in student attacks on staff at Hamilton public schools since the return to in-person learning.

The report for the 2021-22 school year was presented to the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board trustees on Monday.

There were 139 violent incidents against staff that required first aid and 51 needed some type of health care.

Overall, there were 1,719 violent incidents against staff reported in 2021-22, including 1,518 without injuries.

Just over half of the reported incidents were from students in kindergarten through Grade three.

The board says staff will continue to promote safety and implement workplace violence prevention procedures.

Additional resources are targeted towards addressing workplace violence, identifying areas for improvement and developing training and communication.
