SIU clears Hamilton police officer after fatal crash in September

First Published:

Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared a Hamilton officer of wrongdoing following a multi-vehicle collision that killed two men and injured two others last September.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said there was an “interaction” between a Hamilton police officer and a man driving erratically on John St. near Forest Ave. shortly before 11 p.m. on Sept. 25, 2022.

The SIU said the man in the Ford Escape fled northbound on John St., striking and killing two male passengers in a Hyundai Sonata travelling westbound on Young St. The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Ford Escape that fled from the police was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Hamilton Police Service Const. Indy Bharaj has said four vehicles were involved in the crash, including an empty parked car and a forensic services van.

SIU director Joseph Martino found “no reasonable grounds to believe the officer operating the police van committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident.”

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
