MPP Paul Miller files $1.3M lawsuit against Andrea Horwarth and the NDP

Stoney Creek MPP Paul Miller is suing the NDP and Andrea Horwath for $1.3 million for kicking him out.

The NDP ousted Miller just 11 weeks before the provincial election because he was allegedly part of an anti-muslim Facebook group.

Miller said he was discriminated against on the grounds of age as well as, marital and family status.

The claim said the NDP fired members of Millers’ staff and erased his digital footprint including contacts and emails he compiled over the fourteen years he was in office. Miller said he would be at a disadvantage as he runs as an independent in the upcoming provincial election.

The NDP’s provincial director Lucy Watson is one of the names in Miller’s lawsuit. Watson was the one who said she had screenshots that confirm Miller was a part of a Facebook group called ‘Worldwide Coalition Against Islam.’

Miller claims he had no opportunity to respond to these allegations.

Miller hired IT and legal experts that found there were multiple log-ins to his Facebook account from devices and locations Miller had never even visited.

The NDP’s chief of staff Michael Balagus is also named in the lawsuit. Miller claims Balagus told him running in the riding was not a good idea at his age.

The claim said Balagus also raised concerns about Miller’s wife’s involvement in the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board and racist allegations against her as another reason not to seek re-election.

Miller believes he was kicked out of the party because of his wife, not because of any social media findings.

Watson told CHCH News, “we’re confident that the party and our leader did the right thing, and that Mr. Miller’s claim will go nowhere.”

Paul Miller declined an interview today.
