Options for breast surgery

Women with breast cancer who choose not to have their breasts removed may be more likely to go under the knife in the future.

An English study finds one in five women who undergo breast conserving surgery rather than a mastectomy have another operation within three months.

Experts say this could be because some tumors are difficult to detect and it is hard to get all of the cancerous tissue the first time.

When combined with radiation, breast conserving surgery has similar survival rates to mastectomy.
