Hamilton conference on teen parenting
The complexities of teen parenting were examined by social service agencies, healthcare professionals and educators, along with 2 dozen young parents in Hamilton.
The latest statistics indicate Hamilton has one of the highest birth rates among teen moms nationwide. Although prevention of youth pregnancy is the ultimate goal, members of the young parent network say teens need better supports rather than harsh judgements.
“A lot of people think that young parents try to get pregnant, or that they had a bad life and it happened because of their bad life. But most of us were pretty normal, we were going to school and being normal teenagers and it happened.”
Community service providers view the conference as a call to action, in an attempt to improve the supports offered, as well as simplifying the system for young parents.
