The City of Hamilton is set to install photo-radar cameras along portions of Main and King streets in an effort to promote safety in the crash-prone areas.
The public works committee unanimously voted Wednesday in favour of a plan to create “community safety zones” in certain sections of the two streets.
Drivers caught speeding in those areas will face higher fines. The cameras will be set up in four locations on Main and King streets between January and May 2023.
On Main Street, the cameras will be added between Gage Avenue and the Delta and Dundurn Street and Queen Street. On King Street, the cameras will be installed between Dundurn and Locke Street and Gage and Lottridge Street.
This plan is one of many short-term changes the city is making to reduce the number of pedestrian collisions on Main and King streets.
The city also started adjusting signal timings Wednesday to provide pedestrians with more time to cross busy intersections.
Last month, the city added signs banning right turns at most red lights.
Then in May, council voted to convert the five-lane, one-way Main Street to a two-way road.
