Security cameras are coming to John Rebecca Park in Hamilton amid concerns about an encampment there.

Ward 2 Coun. Jason Farr shared the motion Wednesday and the city’s public works committee unanimously approved the decision.

A number of people experiencing homelessness have been staying at John Rebecca Park, causing issues between encampment residents and businesses in the area.

Farr said the cameras would cost less than $35,000 and the city would determine how privacy would be impacted before installing the cameras.

The longtime councillor also noted the cameras would prevent crime and promote safety for city workers at the park.
